Doubling Up: Wheelchair Sports Inc participated in two events overlapping each other on November 7th. WSI was invited to help with a Adaptive Clinic held at the VA (Robert J. Dole Department of Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center) by the Paralyzed Veterans of America from 1-4pm and also invited to meet, greet and display at the Kansas Truck and Mobility Open House on the 7th & 8th from 10am to 3pm. WSI provided sports equipment and organizational information at both events.

Mark Stever (Paralyzed Veterans of America Rep & WSI Board Member) understands the importance to expose VA staff and Veterans to equipment available for sports and recreation. Many of those attending were amazed at the handcycles and even tried out one on a stationary trainer.

The Group at Kansas Truck and Mobility set out to show what discovering mobility can offer individuals with disabilities. With a host of "Mobility Masters", many of them WSI members, displaying various interests, sports and activities in the new 9,500 sq foot Showroom and Service Facility. On hand were factory rep's from many mobility manufacturers.

Tennis PlayerAir Capital Classic 8th Annual
Wheelchair Tennis Tournament
JUNE 20th - 22nd 2008
Riverside Tennis Center, Wichita, KS. (map)

Another successful event!

Well the Air Capital Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament has come and gone once again. The turn out was good, with 26 players from 7 different states and some very high quality tennis over the 2 1/2 days.  The event started off with the up/down (doubles with one wheelchair and one able bodied on a team)  community event on Friday night with 16 teams, divided into 2 divisions. Both divisions of players had a great deal of fun and some entertaining matches to watch. The  increased prize money this year of $4,000 allowed everyone to go home with some money in their pocket from the tournament.  Tournament play started on Friday at noon and ended at 4:30 PM on Sunday.  Sundays championship day went well although the finals of A-Doubles took 3+ hours to complete, a three setter and a blown tire will do that sometimes.

You can find pictures located on this site to view some of the players. We look forward to hosting the event next year and thank all our sponsors and volunteers for helping make this happen.

WSI Activities:

Handcycling Program: Interested in Handcycling? Riding a bike powered by your arms can be tremendous fun and a great sense of freedom. Whether you are interested in racing, recreation, or just fitness, handcycling has plenty to offer. We have several members that ride handcycles regularly. WSI organizes clinics and events for handcycling several times a year.

Wheelchair Hockey: A sport that occurs during the winter months. This is a highly competitive sport that encourages team play and cooperation. We currently play on hardwood floors, rather than ice, because no costly special equipment is needed.

Wheelchair Tennis: Played by the same rules as able-bodied tennis, except that a wheelchair player gets two bounces to return the ball instead of one. Wheelchair tennis is one the few sports where a disabled person can effectively compete with able-bodied players. We are currently hosting a USTA sanctioned wheelchair tennis tournament each summer.

Other: There are a variety of other sporting opportunities including; Bowling, Boccia, Water Skiing, Snow Skiing, Billiards & Horseback Riding.

If there is a sport or activity that you would like to see Wheelchair Sports, Inc. become involved with please contact us.
