Sports Expo for Timbers' Residents
Aug. 16, 2008
Timbers Expo
Aug. 16, 2008
The board members of Wheelchair Sports, Inc. were invited to the Timbers to
present information regarding adaptive sports; especially wheelchair boccia and
wheelchair bowling. Each of the board members shared their own individual story,
and each one talked about specific topics; ranging from sports, travel,
employment, education, advocacy & Paralympics.
Carol Keller, Challenge Games Coordinator, talked about and demonstrated the
sport of wheelchair boccia, with the use of ramps, push sticks, and other
adaptive devices, just about anyone can play the sport and do well. However, it
takes a great deal of patience and strategy to be able to successfully play.
Dave Storm, Up Down Bowling League Director, talked about the sport of
wheelchair bowling and the adaptive equipment for that sport as well. Once
again, with the use of a ramp, push stick, and other devices, just about anyone
can do it.
Once the demonstrations were over, the participants had a chance to try the
sports and hopefully will become regular participants in the future. Thanks to
everyone that attended and helped plan the event.

Air Capital Classic 8th Annual
Wheelchair Tennis Tournament
JUNE 20th - 22nd 2008
Riverside Tennis Center, Wichita, KS. (map)
Another successful event!
Well the Air Capital Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament has come and gone
once again. The turn out was good, with 26 players from 7 different states and
some very high quality tennis over the 2 1/2 days. The event started off with
the up/down (doubles with one wheelchair and one able bodied on a team)
community event on Friday night with 16 teams, divided into 2 divisions. Both
divisions of players had a great deal of fun and some entertaining matches to watch.
The increased prize money this year of $4,000 allowed everyone to go home with
some money in their pocket from the tournament. Tournament play started on
Friday at noon and ended at 4:30 PM on Sunday. Sundays championship day went
well although the finals of A-Doubles took 3+ hours to complete, a three setter
and a blown tire will do that sometimes.
You can find pictures located on this site to view some of the players. We
look forward to hosting the event next year and thank all our sponsors and
volunteers for helping make this happen.
